How often should you change smoke detector batteries?
Replace smoke detector batteries at least once a year, and test the alarm every month; units with sealed 10-year batteries are replaced as a whole when they expire.
Why it matters
A smoke alarm with a dead battery gives no warning at all. The low-battery chirp tends to start at night, which is why many people pull the battery and forget to put it back.
How to do it
- Pick a date you will remember, such as the clock change or your birthday, and swap every battery that day.
- Press the test button after fitting the new battery and make sure the alarm sounds.
- Vacuum the vents gently, since dust can trigger false alarms or dull the sensor.
- Check the manufacture date on the back: the whole detector should be replaced after about 10 years.
- Never remove a battery to stop a false alarm. Fan the smoke away or press the hush button instead.
