How often should you descale your showerhead?
Descale the showerhead every 3 months, or monthly if you live in a hard-water area.
Why it matters
Limescale blocks the nozzles, so the spray becomes weak and uneven, and it gives bacteria and mould a rough surface to cling to. Descaling takes minutes and costs almost nothing.
How to do it
- Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar, tie it around the showerhead so the nozzles are submerged and leave it for 30 minutes to a few hours.
- Take the bag off and scrub the nozzles with an old toothbrush.
- Run hot water for a minute to flush out the loosened scale.
- For brass, gold or other delicate finishes, limit the soak to 30 minutes and check the manufacturer’s advice.
- If the head is removable, unscrew it and soak it in a bowl instead.
In your HouseKiper schedule
Descale the showerhead and aerators: every 3 months. Soak them in white vinegar for a few hours (or tie a bag of vinegar around the showerhead). Get a reminder when it is due.
